What’s the Latest at County Grounds Park – Jonathan Piel

March Evening Program: What’s the Latest at County Grounds Park? — Special Guest: Jonathan Piel

All are welcome to join us for the last evening program of the 2024–2025 club year. On Tuesday, March 25, at 7 PM, Jonathan Piel of Friends of County Grounds Park will give a presentation on The History and Development of County Grounds Park.

Jonathan helps champion the preservation of the County Grounds Park by connecting people with its rich past as a historic place of healing for Milwaukee County’s mentally ill. Jonathan addresses a very sensitive topic in accessible ways for people of all ages, using first-hand accounts from historical administrators and patients. Participants will come to appreciate the challenges of delivering humane care for the mentally ill from the 1850s forward. The presentation will also feature the impact that women had in the very early years of Milwaukee’s public medical health care, and will include many historic photos, maps, and onsite 1950s film clips. You’ll never look at Wauwatosa’s County Grounds Park, Sanctuary Woods, or compassionate mental healthcare the same way again.
